My friend sent me a link to a YouTube video the other day that made me pretty sick.
It was an animation of an angel who was watching a mugging at gun point. He floated up to heaven asked God "why don't you stop it"?
He replied "I have given them free will"..."so, you care more about the free will of the mugger than the lady or her son watching?"....
"well, um, ah, ummmmm"
God gave the pat answer most Christians give about his way being higher, ultimate healing and so forth.
But we ponder this don't we?
He tells us that to live we must die, to gain we must loose, to lead we must be a slave and the rich are doomed. (Mark 10:17-31) How is this supposed to be good news?
No wonder folks who aren't Christians think we're nuts.
The readings this past week keep asking us to appeal to our senses; what to you smell? Life or death? The old song "What's that smell" comes to mind....what's that smell that's around you?
The smell of Christ to me wast the stench of death, but now, by his grace and mercy, it is the smell of life.
It's hard to catch a whiff of God these days unless you make an intentional effort to open the window and let the fresh air in. Ask God to smash the glass house you are stuck in if you need to.
The smog is choking us all. Open the window and breath deeply the Spirit of God.

Jesus and the magical mystery tour...
Oscar Wilde remarked that life imitates art and for many in this era of social personae I would agree. A quick edit photo change of a profile picture and we become what ever we want.
Of course this is not simply limited to Facebook folks. Their are no "fans" of the Yankees but there are Yankee Fans (the same holds true for Red Sox fans as well but that is acceptable..hehe)
But if life is mysterious, how could it have come from art? It is impossible to reproduce the unthinkable. Right?
God might very well have said if any would come after me they must get on the magic bus.
The Beatles movie was a freaky-acid fest (oh please) but nothing that ever came out of the 60's or 70's can compare to the unimaginable things that God has done. Nothing.
People walking on water, the dead coming back to life, blind getting their sight...no stop motion, no funky walruses. Real time.
The Magical Mystery Tour headed out of Egypt because of rivers turning to blood, flies-up-your-nose flies, frogs-in-you-everywhere-frogs and other things.
I can't soften it. It's a full on-real-deal-fact. Historical evidence points to it. A Magical Mystery Tour.
So how did it happen that we got on this bus?

So how did it happen that we got on this bus?
For we are the aroma of Christ to God among those who are being saved and among those who are perishing; to the one a fragrance from death to death,
to the other a fragrance of life to life.
Who is sufficient for these things?
For we are not peddlers of God's word like so many-
but in Christ we speak as persons of sencerity,
as persons sent from God and standing in his presence.
...not that we are competant of ourselves to claim anything as coming from us; our competence is from God..."(see 2 Corinthians 2:17. 3:4)
We got on the Magical Mystery Tour Bus because someOne paid our bus pass...and the ride if nuts!
Don't believe me? Guess you missed the bus, but that's ok, you can still get on.

what if Pharoh offered beer and cake?
A friend of mine came across this awesome take on what really motivates us and it's not what you think.
I don't want to take anything away from the anything but here are a few things to ponder after you've watched the video
1. what has the church been using for motivation
2. what does the Gospel use for motivation
3. what have been the results

w.w.b.b?
What would Bishop R.C. Ryle blog?
"If Christ crucified has not his rightful place in your sermons,
and sin is not exposed as it should be,
and your people are not plainly told what they ought to believe,
and be, and do,
your preaching is of no use....
An unpreaching minister is of little use to the church of Christ. He is a lampless light house
a silent trumpeter,
a sleeping watchman,
a painted fire"
Bishop Ryle was deeply concerned about right doctrine because he was deeply concerned about people's souls. Are we? Or are we more concerned about us being right?
Now, Ryle was not telling his people to check out and follow blindly, not at all. He was showing them the standard upon which to judge their actions. We are called to think all the time. Christians are not called to check their brains at the door, unfortunately all to many Christians and non-Christians alike believe they can and should!
So this is what Jesus was telling his followers in Mark 9:30-41. This is the passage where Jesus takes a kid in his arms and says "whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and who ever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me"
So what is this really about (oh, wait, I pray I won't be wrong on the Internet)...Jesus is telling us to welcome the outcasts and the worthless just as he welcomed us since we indeed were outcast and worthless as well.
It's not the Bible says it, I believe it, that settles it". If that were the case we would not have needed the cross.
When taken with this understanding the passage from Ryle is very simple;
Christ was crucified because God demanded justice for disobedience
We did it. We were not framed.
Come to terms with that,
ask for forgiveness
and come under the rule of God.
His Spirit will live in you.
You can't save yourself.
So quit telling people where they are wrong all the time. Yep, sometimes we have to point folks straight...but understand that Jesus says you have to take care of your own junk first, then and only then can you help others.
Next time you jump online to bash another, examine your own heart next to Jesus...and ask yourself are you trying to help a person see a truth and that they have been lied to, or are you just ticked off and trying to vent?

God loves family guy
So today God proved He is a family guy.
It was healing Sunday. I know that may sound silly, God heals all the time but at New Hope Anglican Church we have a different service the last Sunday of the month. Our service is focused on praying for the healing of others, anointing with oil for the sick and hurting and laying on of hands. The holy scriptures tell us that God desires us to be whole and well. He wants the best for us.
We were blessed to have a visiting priest with us, Fr. Brian McVey from Saint Alban's Church in Davenport Iowa. Brian is a national leader in the movement to eradicate slavery in North America. He is a brilliant preacher. He has the gift of healing and has literally prayed over people who were dying and has witnessed them coming back to life. But what is most amazing about this man is that he has a sensitivity to the movement of the Holy Spirit and has learned how to humble himself before Almighty God.
He was scheduled to preach today and just before the service he was invited to hear such a powerful story of healing that he simply said "she has to preach today".
Here is what he heard.
Dorathy had a very difficult upbringing. She was estranged from her father for 20-plus years. There was good reason the break but God is redeeming the years the locust have eaten. God is healing her and her healing has a domino effect. She is living what God is showing us at New Hope Anglican Church; God is making pearls of Great Price out of us all. This is not always comfortable but the end produce is magnificent.
Last week Dorathy did the heroic, she sought our her father and a relationship that only God could heal. She forgave him and asked him to forgive her. But God gave them both even greater gifts;
She was raised an atheist by this man yet she still was wooed by Jesus. Her heart has pined away for him and she prayed daily that one day she would be reconciled to him, and that he would be reconciled to God.
Unbeknownst to her he had been wooed by God and had been praying that one day he would meet his daughter, be forgiven and be reconciled.
She sought out the help of her brother to find him. With address in hand she went to his house and in an act so strong that the earth stood still she rang his doorbell. She stood on his doorstep a mere 12 miles from her house and when he finally came to the door he thought something was drastically wrong. She told him a brief story and simply said I want to ask you to forgive me for abandoning you. I forgive you for all that happened. After he could speak again he said "I can die a happy man now"
Today Dorathy stood before our entire little church and shared the story of the prodigal son in real-time. There are no mortal words to express what happened today as this simple, short story fell on the ears of us all. Many understood what they had to do in their own lives,
God is real. His mercy is good. He is restoring all things. Thank you Jesus for healing Dorathy Smolkis and her family. You are so good and we praise you.

God uses basket cases
Sunday school kids can tell you that what kind of pitch was used to make Mose's basket water-tight and what kind of reeds he was stuck in.
How many actually remember that he was set adrift because the Egyptian King had issued a decree to kill all male babies because they were afraid of them.
Do they recall that the Hebrew mid-wives feared God more than death by the hand of Pharaoh and that they lied to him? (Exodus 1:17ff)
Moses would grow to be a hot-headed murder, a real basket case from birth, and God would use him to same his people.
Yes, God loves basket people. We forget that. We think he loves box people who look like they have all of theirs in a row. We get caught up in the details and miss the big workings of God. We loose sight of the fact that God is God and we are not.
Let me be brutally honest; God did a fine job running the world before we were born and will do a fine job of it after we die. While we are here we have the highest privilege of being part of his plan and workings of redemption for the world.
When we understand this simple fact, that we are basket cases and yet God draws us out of the water the we will understand love;

He reached down from on high and took hold of me; he drew me out of deep waters.
He rescued me from my strong enemy and from those who hated me
for they were too mighty for me
Psalm 18:16-17
When we see Jesus as his father sees him we become basket cases too. When we are given the gift of seeing him as the disciples did on the mountain top we are as undone as Isiah was in the heavenly realms.
When we understand we are basket-cases, and become basket cases, Jesus picks up our case and we are deemed free from the flood.

bionic Jesus vision
I used to love to watch the bionic man. Admit it, if you were of TV age back in the 70's you did too. The action figure was sweet; fake skin you could roll up, removable bionic pieces in his arms and legs, and the killer hole in the back of his head that let you have bionic vision. I was just on eBay this morning...perhaps...
The truth is if we are to see what God desires us to see we need more than bionic vision. We need to be made faster, better, stronger.
We are all born near sighted without the ability to see the big picture. The Adam and Eve saw pleasure instead of God's love, Noah's neighbors saw evil instead of good, Joseph's brothers saw themselves instead of God. All these folks needed new eyes.
After their father died his brothers feared that Joseph would give them what they deserved (see Genesis 50:15-26). They had been blessed by his brother and he had even told them that what they did was in actuality God's plan to save an entire nation.
They couldn't see past themselves so they lied.

They couldn't see past themselves so they lied.
"...your father gave us this instruction before he died,
'say to Joseph: I beg you, forgive the crime of your brothers and the wrong
they did in harming you."
"Now, therefore please forgive the crime of the servants of the God of your father"
[and they wept and fell down and said]
"we are here as your slaves"
They got bionic vision and you can too. Here's how.
Even though they approached God (indirectly through Joseph) they;
1) begged, which is an act of submission. It means to plead your case. It is essential when you plead to admit you were wrong.
2) ask for forgiveness
3) admit you broke the law (the crime of your brothers)
4) admit you harmed the person and caused damage
This is the classic model of forgiveness in 12 step programs. Once these are carried out you are till called to make reparations to the person you wronged.
In our case with God, this is impossible. We cannot atone for our sins. Jesus did that for us. Our only appropriate response is to offer our lives to his service.
When we follow these steps we are given bionic vision.
"But you have God-blessed eyes—eyes that see! And God-blessed ears—ears that hear! A lot of people, prophets and humble believers among them, would have given anything to see what you are seeing, to hear what you are hearing, but never had the chance"
Matthew 13:16-17 (The Message)

Jesus doesn't use the point system
I've been using Weight Watches Online. I have two kids, a commute and I study a lot. Like I tell me kids I got a little "fluffy". I want to stay healthy for a number of reasons but I want it to be long term. I've got a simple list of criteria when it comes to taking on new projects that was taught to me by my missionary friends;
1) It must be sustainable.
2) It must use indigenous materials
3) It should be what is needed
So Weight Watchers Online fit the bill for me.
I can eat more than meat, fat and lard.
I don't have to buy a million prepared meals or exercise equipment
I need to loose weight.
It's been a life-style change for me. I carefully look at what I am putting into my mouth. I think about what it is made of, what it will do for me and if I really need it.
I am not alone;

2) It must use indigenous materials
3) It should be what is needed

I am not alone;
Dieting is a national pastime. While the number of Americans who diet varies, depending on the source, the Boston Medical Center indicates that approximately 45 million Americans diet each year and spend $33 billion on weight-loss products in their pursuit of a trimmer, fitter body.
It is easy to see the effects of eating poorly have on our body. It's not so easy to see what effect eating poorly has on the soul.
Paul warned the church in Corinth that they weren't eating well (see 1 Corinthians 11:17-34). They had turned what was supposed to be a time of remembrance of grace into an actual orgy.
They weren't looking at what they were eating and the result was very, very bad.
For when the time comes to eat, each of you goes ahead with his
own supper, and one goes hungry while another becomes drunk!
1 Cor. 11:21
Taking grace for granted makes your heart fat.
Their hearts are fat like grease (Ps 199:70 KJV)
...their hearts are like curdled milk (Aramaic Translation)
Welcome the blessing of Lent, a time when we are called to pause and look deeply at what we are eating and why.
Grace, and the understanding of it are the only things that can cut through the grease and make our hearts healthy again. Join me on my spiritual weight watchers. Can you imagine what would happen if 45 million of us spent 33 billion dollars in an attempt to life out Christ's love for ourselves and the nation?

pencil pushers and daddy's blessings
One day at the aquarium my kids and I were next to the seal lion tank while a trainer was taking observations. One of the seal lions, Jetty (or as my kids call her "jenny") was locked on the trainers' pencil. Back and forth, up and down. She never lost sight and she never got distracted.
No matter how many people walked up to the side of the tank as soon as a pencil came out she was attached to nothing else.
The next time we went I put two #2 pencils in my backpack and have done so ever since. Needless to say the Bywater Girl's are the sole object of Jenny's affection.
God calls us to do the same, to follow his pencil and not get distracted by all the other things staring at us through the glass. (Genesis 49:1-28) Waving arms, shouting kids, people jumping up and down. It's all trying to take our focus off the pencil.
Now here is where it gets tricky and this whole pencil-God thing can get off track so stay with with me;
The Sea Lions follow the pencil and at times it is in different hands. We can't do that. We need to follow the trainer. But we can't, because we want the thing that is before our eyes grabbing our attention.
Paul speaks of this. (1 Corinthians 10:14-11:1) Other people follow other pencils and trainers. We cannot. They are not of God. They are demons.
But God is in front of them as well, begging them to come to him. All it takes is for them to beg as well. (Mark 7:24-37). When we can approach with faith and assurance that God is the one who controls not only the pencil but the entire world the blessings fall. He is caring for them as well. God causes the rain to fall on the just and unjust. But the great blessings await.
What pencil are you chasing?

Palmolive Holy Water?
We should replace Holy Water with Palmolive dish soap. It does more that make your dishes clean, it softens you hands, right? So if if can soften your hands by soaking in it, it should soften our hearts if we dunk our whole bodies in it. We try everything else and it doesn't work.
We get dirty living. Our hands and hearts get callused. Same thing happens with our spiritual hearts. We want the best dish soap for our lives, one that makes our outsides squeaky clean. Jesus says that won't due. The dirt is on the inside and no amount of scrubbing with get rid of it. Our mouths belie our hearts. We open them up and what's in our soul spills out. We need to not just rinse our mouths out with soap but swallow it as well, and perhaps scrape our tongues with pumice stones (yuck)
Jesus came clean about this with the church in. They were "giving" land to the church instead of using it to take care of their parents. It was like taking a tax credit for themselves. If it really is a gift, why do we want to write it off on our taxes? We want to save more money for our own pockets. We can't hide truth from God.
We can sparkle on the outside while the inside is rank.
Here is where the power of Jesus comes in. He can do what no soap can do. He can clean the inside of the cup. (Mark 7:1-23) Only when we have a softened heart, one that is not hard, can we even begin to life the full life that is available to us. His blood cleans us deeper and makes us softer than anything else on the planet.
So there ya go, the Holy Gospel of our Lord and Savior. Try soaking in that for two weeks and see what happens.

i feel like i'm taking crazy pills!
The fourth watch of the night is when you hear monsters in your closet and under your bed. The shadows grow teeth and the wind speaks with an accent. It's bad enough when you are on solid ground under your covers. Imagine you are floating on the water with the nearest solid ground many feet under water. You can't tell where the water stops and the sky begins. You become painfully aware that the night terrors are not half half over. It is the time when all optimists become pessimists.
Jesus walks right into the maelstrom. Nothing is phasing him. The wind can't move him, the water can't envelope him. No teeth, no voices, no fear. (Mark 6:47-56)
And even though the light of the world walked to them they were blinded by darkness. They were gripped in terror and exhausted from pulling at the oars all night. They were relying on what they saw but they were all blind.
Three blind mice, three blind mice. See how they run!
Wouldn't you be? Wouldn't you be terrified if you saw a person walk on water?
Once in the boat the fear did not abate, even when given the command to take heart. They had hard hearts and their hard hearts made them blind. They had done this to themselves it seems. God had hardened hearts before to display his power but here it seems that it was their own doing. For whatever the reason they couldn't see him for who he was.
But when they reached the shore, the crowd saw him, ran to him and brought their sick so that they may be healed.
This is Mark telling the story of Jesus at his finest. Those closest to Jesus don't get it but the crowds on the outside get it. The crowds bring the sick for healing, the inner group argues about who will be greatest. The crowds want to hail him as king, the inner group tells him to shut up he's crazy.
Do you see what I see?
Sometimes I feel like I'm taking crazy pills.

wonder bread or bread of wonder
I grew up on Wonder Bread and I didn't die. I also drank from hoses, didn't own a bike helmet and rode in the back -squishy space of my parents VW and survived.
This is not to say these things were good for me. My parents didn't know, nor their parents and-so-on
And then into the fabric of our reality Jesus the Bread of Wonder enters in and from Bethlehem no less which translates to "house of bread"
Here the parallels end;
Wonder Bread is enriched while the Bread of Wonder does the enriching
Wonder Bread builds strong vitamins 8 ways while the Bread of Wonder builds a whole new body
Wonder Bread is the bread of champions while the Bread of Wonders is the champion of Bread
When we are faithful to God in our love he offers us payment not in riches, nor health nor fame, but bread (see 1 Corinthians 9:1-15).
Not the old bread from heaven. Our ancestors ate that and died.
No, this is new bread and those who eat it are given more than health. We are given eternal life (see John 6:30-46)
I wonder today, why we slave for bread that kills us while we are offered free bread that saves us?

Naked as a jay-bird and proud as a peacock
"but he isn't wearing any clothes!" cried the young girl as the king paraded through town in The Emperor's New Clothes. Naked as a jay-bird and proud as a peacock he strutted about exposing his position. This tale always cracked me up as a child but now as an adult I am reminded almost daily this is indeed my reality. I am the emperor.
We expose ourselves all the time (pun intended) to God. We think we have control, we think we put ourselves in our positions, we think we are indeed the masters of our own destiny. We think we are kings in the finest of dress in our own eyes when in reality we are in naked paupers.
In today's reading from the lectionary we are nearing the end of the dramatic story of how God saved his people through a humble man who had experienced temptation, disgrace and attempted murder by his own brothers.
They were envious of his clothes. The magic coat of many colors was the focal point of their hatred and resentment. Through it Satan spoke lies to them; they were not loved in their fathers' eyes, they were insignificant, they were deserving of greater grace than everyone else. In their eyes it meant position and power. The same lies the Tempter used in the garden to convince Adam and Eve worked into their hearts as well.
But the truth was in deed the opposite. In the eyes of their father the coat was a symbol of grace and love.
They mocked him when he recounted the dream God had given him that they would one day his entire family would be bowing down to him. "Are you to rule over us!" It was unheard off in their culture, a younger brother taking a position of prominence over the elders, even his parents! So the brothers conspired against him and God. They ripped the grace and love off of him and threw their brother into a pit only to sell him later as a slave.
In a wonderful twist of irony, Joseph, like Jesus, reverses death with live and hatred with love. He not only feeds them but he clothes them with new garments when they are reunited (Genesis 45:16-28).
To each of them he gave new clothing, but to Benjamin he gave

They ripped the grace and love off of him and threw their brother into a pit only to sell him later as a slave.
What they perceived as arrogance from his brother was in reality Providence from God.
In a wonderful twist of irony, Joseph, like Jesus, reverses death with live and hatred with love. He not only feeds them but he clothes them with new garments when they are reunited (Genesis 45:16-28).
To each of them he gave new clothing, but to Benjamin he gave
three hundred shekels of silver and five sets of
clothes.
When we perceive that we are clothed in our own righteousness we get into deep trouble. We start with one thin strand of silk and spin and spin until we find that we have wrapped ourselves in a tangled web. We go to extremes to maintain our inner lie that we indeed are not naked as a jay-bird. We, like Herod who killed God's forerunner of Grace and the proud emperor are so afraid that others will see our nakedness that we will do whatever it takes to maintain the lie. We cannot keep this up forever.
At the final judgement God will indeed judge us by what we are wearing. Will we stand before Him naked as a jay-bird but proud as a peacock or in the finest of wedding clothes?
God is merciful and kind. When we can get over ourselves we can then get to God. When we are honest and admit that we are pitifully naked and in need of help he does not merely cover our nakedness, but gives us the best set of clothes in the house (read Luke 15:22).

Slavery, sex and Satan
"The only way to resist a temptation is to yield to it. Resist it, and your soul grows sick with longing for the things it has forbidden to itself."
Or so says Oscar Wilde in Picture of Dorian Grey.
We all have temptations and desires. They were hard-wired into all of us. In themselves the act of desire is not evil. The problem we have is that they get twisted. Much like water our inner cravings take the path of least resistance to our desired end.
We are hungry, so we eat.
We are thirsty, so we drink.
Our desires drive us. The trick is to keep the right objects of desire in front of us, lest we drive ourselves off a cliff.
Joseph's brothers in the Bible desired the love of their father. This is good and natural desire and we were created to do so. The problem was that they were blinded to all else and they didn't really want his love but his stuff. They couldn't see what was in store for them in the natural world. They couldn't see that God was going to send a famine on the land so that the leader of Egypt would seek after the face of God. This caused them to sell into slavery the one who would eventually offer them salvation from death. (see Genesis 45:1-15)
They kept not the good in front of themselves, but themselves in front of the good.
Same thing happens with sex. Sex is wonderful. It is a gift from God. It is the ultimate act of union and consummation of a marriage. Yet as good as it gets it is a twisted good. Our desire was supposed to be for God. Man and woman used to run around naked in the most amazing outdoor garden and never even thought about having sex. All they wanted to do was spend time with the Lord. So they got their desires twisted up and as a result woman's desire turned from God to a mere man. (see Genesis 2:16) I know this may seem odd. I'm a pastor and have performed marriages. I have a wife. I love to marry people and I love being married but these are honestly distractions (see 1 Corinthians 7:32ff). God knew (he's smart like that) that the desire for sexual intimacy if powerful so He placed it within a safe framework of marriage between one man and one woman. (see 1 Corinthians 7:1)
We keep not the good in front of ourselves, but ourselves in front of the good.
We're messed up. Be honest. We all struggle to crave the good. It is not natural. Oscar Wilde was right. We can't eliminate desires so the only way to abate them is to feed them. For me, it's like the diet I'm on. I can ignore the hunger only until it is time for me to feed my hunger at meal time.
Jesus has a different take of Oscar here. Our temptations are not from God they are from Satan and these Satan picks from our own hearts. (see James 1:13). Now, if we are wise and honest with ourselves we will admit we have this without fear. Then, and only then can we offer them to Jesus, the healer. This is where our weakness becomes our strength. When we can desire and depend upon God and not ourselves then the lies of Satan and the work of his minion are replaced by the proper object.
We need to do this intentionally. It takes a deliberate act of the will. This desire is a response, one that was initiated by the Holy Spirit. On our own power, we cannot desire God but with His power we can. Place yourselves in positions of full dependence upon God. The disciples went out with no food, clothes or money.
Bart was right, our pain cannot cleanse us for our sin, our desires, or our demons.
That job, was taken by Jesus. He alone had the power to keep nothing between himself and the Good.

turning trash into treasure
We love finding discarded things and making them treasures. Objects that were garbage receive places of honor;
Old glass worn smooth by the waves and the sand fills jars on shelves.
The houses of dead sea creatures are turned into elaborate Jewelery.
On February 26, 2007 it was reported that a 1909 Honus Wagner tobacco card, formerly owned by Wayne Gretzky, sold for $2.35 million US to an anonymous Southern California collector. This makes the card the most expensive baseball card ever purchased. This was tossed out by a person at one time.
As the saying goes; "one man's trash is another man's treasure". All it takes is for one person to desire it. We have collectibles and antiques, tag sales and flea markets, eBay and Craigs list.
We don't want it but someone will give me good money for it.
And Jesus comes and messes it all up. Jesus
He doesn't value the discarded and old for being discarded and old.
He's not like the kids in countries we see on TV looking for scrapes of death to keep them alive in mountains of refuse.
He doesn't think trash is treasure. He makes treasure out of trash.
For us this impossible. It's like trying to make a bowl of oatmeal when the only ingredients we have is a pork roast, some diet coke and an eel. Only he can make one-plus-one to equal three.
He wants. He died to do it. Demons know it. He took five hundred pieces of junk out of a man one day and stuck them inside a pig. The man was trash, he made him a treasure. (Mark 5:1-20)

for Christ's sake, let's surf!
God gives us personalities and desires, not just physical bodies. He is smart, God is. He wants to be heard. He wants to be found.
God gave me a passion for surfing long before he gave me a passion for himself. It began when I was a little kid who spent his summers body surfing at Nausett Beach on Cape Cod. I was the kid who thought it was fun to get trashed in shore break. Each night I would dig a pound of sand out of my ears. I would watch the surfers with envy. I would play Beach Boy records, buy puca shell necklaces from tourist traps and wear Senior Lopez pullover shirts.
But I was a Connecticut boy, landlocked and longing.
Then one day in a bookstore I found "the book", a copy of Surfer Magazine. I cut all the pictures out and plastered my wall. I filled out every little annoying card inside and soon my Connecticut mailbox was stuffed with advertisements for all things surf.
I eventually went to college on the East End of Long Island. One day a friend let me borrow his old Hawaiian Design single fin pin tail (all I knew it was surf board) and after that I was wet almost every day for seven years. I chased every swell on the East Coast.
To make this short, the God I wasn't looking for chased after me. He didn't turn me into a church kid. God used me, all of me, for His glory. He's good like that.
My passion for surfing didn't diminish, it changed. It was no longer an escape but an entrance into the heart of God. It became a place of prayer, worship and adoration. It became a place where God showed me His glory in dancing dolphins, lazy pelicans, sunrises and sunsets. He revealed deep mysteries while surfing full-moon sessions in glowing algae. I learned of the spiritual life along with the tides; always changing, always constant.
The waves became a place to share my faith were few others could reach. I wasn't smacking people with my board saying "turn or burn!" but folks would start talking and well, when you are surrounded by His glory how can you not talk about it?
My faith grew and was watered by the sea. My passion for life didn't go out, it grew brighter. To be honest folks along the way tried to harness me and to my fault I let them. But as I age and grow in my faith I am seeing more and more that I am to enjoy God in the way he created me to enjoy him. This gives him great delight.
I didn't place the lamp he lit inside a church, He stuck it on a surfboard for all the world (Mark 4:21-34)

Jesus died for trickle-down economics
There are more than 800 references to money in the Bible and most of them relate to trickle-down economics. God is the author and creator of trickle-down economics. He expects it. He demands it.
When our lives are bought back from death we are suppose to let the Grace given to us trickle down. At least that is what the Gospel expects to happen. If is doesn't perhaps you missed the fact that you don't have enough money to ward of death.
Last night a group of folks lived this out and it was beautiful;
Our team consisted of two dads and their four kids ranging in ages from 11-18, one grandfather and his 16 year old grandson and a husband and wife. The participated in New Hope Anglican Church's bi-weekly "Loving our Community" furniture delivery and ended up in what has been determined by local police to be Waterbury's highest crime housing complex. We had come to bring an apartment full of furniture to a teenage mom and her 8 month old son who had just left the Salvation Army Shelter. This was their first home.
It took awhile to find her building as it was dark and the barracks-like numbers were hidden in the dark. Thankfully the man and woman I walked up to and asked for help were the security guards for the complex. They directed us to the building but we still had no unit number. As we walked up to the building we ran into a young dad struggling to carry his toddler and bags up the walk. We offered to help but he refused until one of the team opened the door for him. Suddenly he said "I think the second unit from the end just got moved into".
We knocked on the door and found mom and baby. She had to place to sit, no table, no bed. Her 8 month old son was in his pack-n-play with one small toy and nothing else besides an awful cough. Mom was able to tell us he was born with a heart murmur and is always sick. Sometimes he turns blue.
Our team brought in a bed, bedding, sheets, dishes, pans, a couch, table, chairs, end tables, lamps, diaper, wipes and baby soap and shampoo. She nor her son were never baptized nor been in a church but I asked if I could put oil on his head and ask God to heal him. She said yes so I prayed for God's mercy to fall on the little boy. One high school freshman played with him after while another went upstairs and made up mom's new bed. A grandfather and grandson brought in a dresser, a dad and son put together the mirror. A grade school kid brought in the kitchen stuff. A husband and wife who were the mom's age when they had their first kid loved up on the little boy. We prayed for them and I went to the kitchen and took one of her new pans, filled it with tap water, blessed it and walked through every room of her house with her asking God to come and stay with them, to keep them safe, to give them food, and to sleep well and be healthy.
All these people who helped last night knew they were bought from Death by God and that the price was his only boy. (Mark 4:1-20)
The Grace of God trickled all the way down from heaven to the projects because he is Love. It began as a drop of blood from a crown of thorns and will turn into a flood to heal the nations. We just got caught up in the flood.
Lesson #1. We are owned by evil. We know this is true because we will all die one day. We were created to exist forever.
You know the story of how Adam landed us in the dilemma we're in— first sin, then death, and no one exempt from either sin or death. (Romans 5:12)
Lesson #2. All life is of equal worth. A rich woman is as valuable to God as a poor man is.
The rich are not to give more than a half shekel and the poor are not to give less when you make the offering to the LORD to atone for your lives. (Exodus 30:15)
Lesson #3. God can buy your life back.
God paid a high price for you (1 Corinthians 7a)
Lesson #4. When you are bought back the price spent on you is expected to trickle down.
You, my brothers, were called to be free. But do not use your freedom to indulge the sinful nature; rather, serve one another in love. (Galatians 5:13)
When our lives are bought back from death we are suppose to let the Grace given to us trickle down. At least that is what the Gospel expects to happen. If is doesn't perhaps you missed the fact that you don't have enough money to ward of death.

door god bouncers in church?
We were blessed by an old friend last night at our house for dinner. We've known her for years and have watched her faith grow deep and authentic, one that asks questions yet trusts. She's bringing her faith to bear on her life in a subtle yet strong way, like the slow move of the tide.
She's been trying to find a place to worship and was sharing obstacles I have never heard of before. As a pastor I usually here things like;
I don't need to be in a church, I can worship God on my own
I don't feel like I'm being fed there
I don't like the music
Her latest problem? The bouncer wouldn't let her in. Honestly. She arrived at a particular church (one that I would say preaches the the Gospel) a bit late which is very much like her she admitted. She was greeted at the door by bouncers who would not let her in. So New York she told me! But the reason they were there didn't blow my mind until I started to pray this morning;
They couldn't let her in because there was no room. It was packed to the point of fire code. What did they do? They polity handed her a ticket to the next service so that she would be guaranteed entrance.
Last night I laughed with her about it. This morning it caused me to pray that the healing, loving power of God and the desire to worship Him would fall so heavy on our community that we would have to use bouncers to keep folks safe.
Jesus did have bouncers; the disciples. They had it wrong though. They were acting like "door god's" in the Hampton's and only allowing those in who were on their "A" list (or who dressed hot enough).
Jesus didn't need bouncers to keep undesirables out simply because these were the one's he came for. He needed bouncers because so many wanted to be healed and experience the love of His Father.
Those who thought they were on the A-list were complaining to Jesus. His response? You can get in, but it's not about dress. It's about your heart. Read it in Mark 3:19b-35
So today I will be praying for a great reversal for all of our churches. I don't care about "the numbers game". I don't say a church is awesome because it has so many people in it. But I will pray honestly that our churches will need bouncers who are trained to keep the masses seeking Jesus safe, instead of ushers who are trained in greeting visitors so that they will come back.

swiming against the tides
I love tides. I spent my summer playing in tide pools in Cape Cod Bay. We rented a cottage in Brewster, a little town in Cape Cod Massachusetts. The bay is wide and shallow so when the tide goes on the sand bar literally stretches for miles.
Each day we would wait for the water to pull back and expose the sea bed and we would race out like a conquering army with buckets to plunder clams, shells, and whatever was left flopping or stinking on the wet sand. The bolder and older folks in town would walk farthest out following the water and race it back in. I would dream and plan that one day I would walk out to the edge of the earth with them, my rubber raft in tow so as to have a safety net in case the tide got the better of me.
You can't stop the tide.
This was the lesson that Jesus was giving the religious leaders when he came to heal. The tides of God pulled back the waters covering their hearts and exposed the bedrock of their soles. He found little treasure. His buckets were empty.
Jesus came to heal and restore. He came to save lives, not kill. He brought the tides of God's restoration and they tried to swim against it. They were drowning people.

He has made us competent as ministers of a new covenant—not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.
2 Corinthians 3:6
The Law of God is like a tide in that it exposes our true nature and the Grace of God returns the water back over us covering up all the dirt. We cannot tell the tide what to do (1 Cor. 4:1-7). Even when we feel as if we were left high and dry by God, his plan continues to roll. (Genesis 41:1-13).
Let the tides of Lent have their way. Allow God to pull back the waters and look at yourself. Do this without fear, for the Living Water covers us. Don't swim against it. Go with it my friends. Go with it.
You cannot stop the tides.

getting funky with Jesus and the boyz
I spent a quick stint teaching at Hall High School while I pondered if I would pursue a teaching career. Having not graduated high school with my class because I failed US history you can imagine how it felt to teach high school history. To make it even more ironic the assistant principle I worked under was my former high school math teacher. I was a terror in her class! It blew her mind that I was actually teaching, so much so that she had to literally walk into my class one day to observe it. The class hushed as she stood in the doorway. She folded her arms, shook and her head and announced to the class "you have no idea who is teaching you".
The fancy people said the same thing to Jesus when he was eating with tax collectors and other sinners. But he knew, he knew full well. Jesus hung out with the kids who messed up, who partied, who did aweful things. They were sick. They needed a healer.
So in walks the doctor and heals their fatal disease. The only proper response when you beat death in to party long, loud and hard.
The time was coming when the doctor was going to leave for a bit. Then it would be a time to be sad, waiting for the final full healing. The sickness would still hurt and come back a bit until then.
This party was a new thing, and new skin.
Have you made it to the party? Are you loud?

Helen Keller was one smart potato head
We're as messed up as a Mr. Potato Head in the hands of a person who is really bored. Everything is out of place and doesn't work right. Yes science geeks I know that spindle fibers do their best during mitosis and meiosis to to line our chromosomes up so that our parts are where they are supposed to be. What I mean is that our eyes don't see what they should, our ears don't hear right and our mouth sings way off tune...
Paul speaks about this in the First Letter to the Church in Corinth. "The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned." Let me put it this way;
We are like Potato heads when we come out of the box and we look to our own understanding to put the pieces together. Knowledge is not bad but it's incomplete. It can only see what is physical. So when we try and figure out life and all of the stuff in the box that comes with it we miss out on what the real potential is.
Wait, it gets better! Then along comes someone who "knows" what it should look like and pulls it apart. Paul, the potato master (dare I say Jedi?) would say no, let's bring this back to Hasbro. Put the pieces in the box...
Now, if the place was packed we could duct tape some string to the box and carry it up to the roof. Thankfully we would find a pry bar up there. We could rip a hole in the roof and lower Mr. Potato Head to the foot of the designer. He could put it right and cover our mistakes (see Mark 2:1-12).
And here is where Lent fits in! This season is made for potato fixing! It's a time to get out of the playroom of life, crawl into the box (for a little while) and bring our hearts to the Master Designer. It makes no sense trying to rid ourselves of everything to to gain everything. To the deaf, dumb and blind it makes no sense. To those who can see, hear and speak, it is light in the darkness.
She was one smart potato. God is searching for his potatoes (Psalm 50).

Listen to the words of Helen Keller...perfect vision, perfect hearing and clear speech;
They took away what should have been my eyes
(But I remembered Milton's Paradise)
They took away what should have been my ears
(Beethoven came and wiped away my tears)
They took away what should have been my tongue
(But I had talked with God when I was young).
He would not let them take away my soul:
Possessing that, I still possess the whole.
