One day at the aquarium my kids and I were next to the seal lion tank while a trainer was taking observations. One of the seal lions, Jetty (or as my kids call her "jenny") was locked on the trainers' pencil. Back and forth, up and down. She never lost sight and she never got distracted.
No matter how many people walked up to the side of the tank as soon as a pencil came out she was attached to nothing else.
The next time we went I put two #2 pencils in my backpack and have done so ever since. Needless to say the Bywater Girl's are the sole object of Jenny's affection.
God calls us to do the same, to follow his pencil and not get distracted by all the other things staring at us through the glass. (Genesis 49:1-28) Waving arms, shouting kids, people jumping up and down. It's all trying to take our focus off the pencil.
Now here is where it gets tricky and this whole pencil-God thing can get off track so stay with with me;
The Sea Lions follow the pencil and at times it is in different hands. We can't do that. We need to follow the trainer. But we can't, because we want the thing that is before our eyes grabbing our attention.
Paul speaks of this. (1 Corinthians 10:14-11:1) Other people follow other pencils and trainers. We cannot. They are not of God. They are demons.
But God is in front of them as well, begging them to come to him. All it takes is for them to beg as well. (Mark 7:24-37). When we can approach with faith and assurance that God is the one who controls not only the pencil but the entire world the blessings fall. He is caring for them as well. God causes the rain to fall on the just and unjust. But the great blessings await.
What pencil are you chasing?
